COCHISE ONCOLOGY
Sierra Vista, Arizona

Cochise Oncology is a new 15,000 square foot, state-of-the art cancer center located at in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Completed in October 2006 the facility was founded by Dr. Janet Nettleton, a radiation oncologist whose treatment philosophy is based on total patient care. Cochise Oncology offers patients a comfortable and respectful experience in a soothing environment while they receive the latest cancer treatments available.  Having comprehensive and innovative cancer services in this growing community allows patients to elect to receive treatment in Sierra Vista rather than travel to Tucson or Phoenix.

The architectural team of CDG Architects, Michael R. Wattis Inc., and Chestnut Construction designed a building with the specific needs of cancer patients in mind. The building elevations distinguish it from a traditional hospital – multiple parapet heights and façade depths, interesting angles and a variety of building materials and colors supplant the characteristic broad massing of a traditional hospital. Conveying warmth and human scale, the building also exudes the confidence of the staff members to provide the highest quality services.

Interior design of the building fosters a friendly, home-like atmosphere. The flow of the center — with its warm Southwestern colors, inviting reception area and soft lighting throughout the building — immerses patients in peaceful surroundings. Room sizes, including heights, allow for the advent of future equipment placement. Natural and incandescent light contribute to warm tone color values, distinctly more relaxing than traditional fluorescent lighting. Sub-waiting areas for radiation patients and the chemotherapy suite open into enclosed landscaped courtyards. Private, quiet areas are provided for patients and families to gather in.  The mechanical systems are designed using highly effective sound attenuation technologies.

Cochise Oncology is using the latest technology in radiation therapy, an advanced treatment system called TomoTherapy. There are currently 109 TomoTherapy machines worldwide; Cochise Oncology’s unit is the only one in Southern Arizona. Thoughtful placement of TomoTherapy, HDR therapy and CT Scan equipment allows staff to operate efficiently, provides easy access to operators and maintenance providers, affords privacy and focus for patients and staff.

The facility features radiation therapy and chemotherapy suites, supported by three nurses stations, several exam rooms, a consulting room where doctors meet with patient sand family members, a staff area and a spacious reception area.  Conference rooms are provided for community support groups; space is also provided for support staff such as counseling, nutritionist, massage therapy and pastoral care specialists.
