Project Credit Summary

Materials and Resources Credit

MRp1: Storage and Collection of Recyclables (required)

Dedicated areas for the collection and storage of recycling materials, including cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, and metals are provided throughout the facility, thereby facilitating the reduction of waste generated by building occupants that is hauled to and disposed of in landfills. Bins are provided at individual workstations as well as the staff lounges.

MRc2: Construction Waste Management (2 points)

Through the implementation of a construction waste management plan involving a careful tracking and sorting of materials, including cardboard, metal, acoustical tile, concrete, plastic, wood, glass, gypsum, carpet and insulation, 94.7% of construction and demolition debris was diverted from disposal in landfills and incinerators. Redirectingrecyclable materials back into the manufacturing process will help reduce demand for virgin resources and, in turn, reduce the environmental impacts associated with recource extraction, processing and, in many cases, transportation. Minimizing landfill debris will help extend the lifetime of existing landfills, thereby avoiding the need for expansion of new landfill sites.

MRc4: Recycled Content (2 points)

Over 28% of the total value of materials for the new clinic contain post-consumer and pre-consumer recycled content. As a result, the clinic has contributed to an increased demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing the impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

MRc5: Regional Materials (2 points)

Over 31% of the total value of materials for the new clinic have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site. As a result, the clinic has contributed to an increased demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

MRc7: Certified Wood (1 point)

Over 58% of the total value of new wood used in the clinic has been identified as certified wood based materials and products in accordance with the Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) Principles and Criteria, for wood building components. By incorporating these products throughout the clinic's structural framing, general wall framing, flooring, doors, and finishes, El Rio is helping to encourage environmentally responsible forest management.
